The one place you can rely on to relax after a tiring day is your bedroom. It should be a place of sanctuary where you can retreat to for the perfect night’s sleep.

We’ve had our fair share of experience when it comes to bedroom décor, so this blog will share our top tips and advice to ensure that you nail your bedroom design.

1. Choose your style

Not sure where to start with decorating your bedroom? Personally, we think the best place to start is a good old fashioned mood board. Find a selection of images you love and collate them together. Look through them and start to pick out the colours, fabrics and styles you have been drawn to. If there appears to be a mixture of styles that you’re drawn to, don’t be afraid to combine the two! There are no rules against mixing décor styles – in fact it can make your bedroom totally unique to you.

2. Choose your colour

When it comes to your colour palette, you can opt for a subtle, soothing colour palette or something with a bit more impact. Whichever you go for is entirely up to you and your personal preferences. Opting for softer and more restful shades will create a much more calm and serene space, while richer, jewel-tones offer a cosy and atmospheric feeling. The great thing about your bedroom is it’s a room you generally only use on an evening before you head to sleep, so it doesn’t necessarily need to be as neutral as you might opt for in a living area, where you spend a lot of time.

3. Think about furniture size

As with any room, pre-planning your furniture is key. Ideally the best way to do this is to create a to-scale floor plan of your space with your key furniture pieces mapped out. It’s important that your furniture is the right scale for the space you have. If you have space for a bigger bed, then sizing up will likely suit the space better and prevent it from looking ‘lost’. The same goes for smaller rooms – try to avoid heavier, larger beds that will overwhelm the space and leave little room to move around.

For bedrooms with higher ceilings, opting for a headboard that is taller than average will help to balance out the space. You can even play around with accent chairs, dressers or other bedroom furniture if you have the room. These can help balance out the other end of your room and fill in any empty spaces you might have.

4. Storage is key

To ensure your bedroom maintains its function of being a serene place to relax and rest, make sure you have somewhere to store things out of sight. Choosing a roomy bedside table with drawers can house the things you use nightly such as lotions, glasses or books. Another great option (if you have the space) is a storage bench at the foot of the bed. You can store any cushions, blankets or even spare bedding sets here. If you’re short on space in your bedroom and don’t have built-in storage under your bed, try placing shallow boxes underneath your bed and hide them with a bed skirt instead!

5. Lighting

In your bedroom, it’s a good idea to layer your lighting throughout the room. Small lamps on your bedside tables are a great way to create an ambient feeling and illuminate your corner of the room for a spot of reading before bed. Choosing a soft pendant light for your ceiling that will help diffuse a gentle, warm light around the room will also add to the calm and relaxing feeling you want to create in your bedroom. A dimmer is a great choice for a bedroom, too as you can adjust the lighting depending on the time of the day. As an example, on a morning you might want more light to help you get ready, whereas on an evening you would likely want something a little less harsh and bright before bed.

6. Keep it simple

Your bedroom should ooze sophisticated elegance, regardless of your chosen décor style. A general rule when it comes to your bedroom décor is to leave at least three feet between the bed and other furniture (except for bedside tables) to allow for ease of movement. If you are shorter on space, then sticking to just the key pieces of furniture is a wise choice to avoid your bedroom looking cluttered. Accessories should also be kept to a minimum here. Choose one focal point such as a statement piece of artwork or a gallery area of family photographs. Finishing touches such as flowers and candles work well in a bedroom to create that beautiful, spa-feel, but try to avoid anything else that will overcrowd the space.

7. Luxurious Bedding

There’s nothing quite like that feeling of sinking into a beautiful hotel bed, is there? You can recreate that very same feeling in your own home by investing that little bit extra into some high-quality bed linens. Ideally, your sheets should be 100% cotton or linen, with a high thread count of around 350 (or more). These fabrics are much more breathable than cheaper options that contain polyester, meaning they’ll also stay smelling fresh for longer! To go one step further, look to silk pillowcases, cashmere throws and plush rugs to add that extra touch of luxury.

8. Add some Pattern

Whilst paint is the simplest way to add some colour to your space, wallpaper is a great way to add some pattern into your room, too. Make sure it ties into your colour palette and overall theme. You can opt for a neutral based wallpaper with a simple pattern to add some interest to the space, or on the other end of the spectrum there are a range of bolder colours and prints to choose from. A large floral design in richer, darker tones can add depth and drama behind your headboard, for example.

If wallpaper isn’t your thing, try adding in pattern through other soft furnishings such as cushions, bedding or throws. You can mix and match different colours within your palette into these areas of your décor to help pull the scheme together.

Window Dressings

Windows are often overlooked in a bedroom, however what you choose to dress your windows with should be both practical and aesthetic. Of course, their primary function is to keep the light out, but you also want them to look nice and compliment the space.

For residential properties, we would always recommend curtains, which you can always pair with blinds underneath, too. Again, the fabrics and colours you choose for the curtains should tie into your design. For rooms with a brighter, airier feel, floaty fabrics such as gauze compliment the space well. If you want more of a luxe feel – or something that will help block out the light without the need for blinds – then choosing a heavier fabric such as velvet will work well.

Don’t forget about length, too! If space allows, having the curtains just brushing against the floor will ensure the dressing looks modern and sophisticated, as opposed to shorter curtains that finish just underneath the window. This look can make the room feel a little dated in some cases, so instead opt for floor to ceiling curtains, which have the added bonus of making the room feel bigger.
